Constructing A Flagstone Patio

THE ADVANTAGES OF INSTALLING A FLAGSTONE PATIO

Creating a flagstone patio or walkway without using mortar is an easy  way to extend your home's usable living space into the outdoors.  An attractive patio adds to your home's resale value, yet the project is simple enough for the average home owner to complete successfully.

  • Level
  • Pick and shovel
  • Rubber mallet
  • Forming lumber or edging
  • Tamper or plate compactor
  • String line
  • Underlayment

HOW TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH FLAGSTONE YOU NEED

  1. Determine the size of your patio or walkway
  2. Multiply the length in feet by the width in feet to determine the area's size in square feet.
  3. Random or irregularly shaped flagstones are normally sold by their weight.   Depending on the thickness and consistency of the exact stone that you select for your project, your salesperson can assist you with precisely how many tons you will need.  On average, most random flagstones will yield approximately 100 square feet per ton.  Cut or squared flagstones are typically sold by the square foot, so all that you need to determine is the square footage required for your project.
